Cardiac Rekinesis Therapy (CRK)

CorInnova’s proposed treatment of heart failure represents a shift in the paradigm of regenerative medicine, where healthy motion is restored by utilizing cardiac mechanics. The emerging technology is based on the theory that a failing heart can be rehabilitated by the restoration of correct cardiac motion. The return of favorable motion guides healthy growth and remodeling in the heart, which provides a path to heart recovery in patients that would otherwise be treated with heart replacement therapy. CorInnova has pioneered and termed this treatment cardiac rekinesis therapy (CRK). This idea is comparable to the use of physical therapy to guide the growth and remodeling of joint injuries.

CorInnova is currently testing a minimally invasive direct cardiac compression device that passively and actively controls the heart’s motion throughout the cardiac cycle. The CorAmendTM device restores healthy motion to the injured heart without impeding upon its function. By applying gentle pressure to the heart, the device alleviates stress from the overloaded cardiac muscle without compromising the natural shape of the heart. This allows for the heart to resume healthy motion and begin proper remodeling. The CorAmendTM device also includes a neutral configuration that does not impede heart function when inactivated or being adjusted.

Minimally invasive techniques are utilized to implant the device, where the device remotely morphs to fit around the heart as it is deployed. Due to its unique design properties, the device requires minimal fixation to the heart. Since the device has no direct contact with the blood, no complications associated with coagulation are present.

There are several
existing therapies for CHF, but unfortunately they are only successful for a small subset of patients. Because the heart is a mechanical organ, mechanical stimulation is essential to guide healthy growth and remodeling. For this reason, CorInnova’s novel approach treats motion as the key factor in heart recovery, differentiating the CorAmendTM device from similar therapies.

The CorAmendTM device shows great potential for being used as a combination therapy with all these already existing mechanical, electrical, pharmaceutical, and stem cell therapies.
